A friendship born on the beach

Dan, Charlotte, Tess + Karn met randomly one morning on Patnem Beach, Goa in 2016 – after discovering they all lived in Shoreham-by-Sea back in the UK …it’s a small world!

When we returned home, we decided to hang out on sauna dates as we all loved them for different reasons, and enjoyed the benefits they brought us. During one of our sauna chats Dan + Charlotte mentioned they had enquired about putting a sauna on Kingston Beach, where Tess + Karn had lived opposite for many years.

Knowing Karn could lovingly build it, whilst the rest of us could run it, we decided to set up the saunas as a joint venture – and The Nomadic Sauna was born!

Dan + Charlotte

Dan discovered saun-ing whilst training for an Ultramarathon called ‘Badwater’, which is held in Death Valley – the hottest place on earth!

Currently a member of the GB 24hr Ultra-Running Team, Dan started using a sauna to help him acclimatise to hot climates and began to realise the benefits in helping his recovery, as well as his training. In a non-stop, 400km self-navigated Ultramarathon held in the Gobi desert, Dan smashed the course record by 20 hours, surprising the organisers who had to rush to set up the finish line. He has had daily saunas ever since!

Charlotte prefers to relax when she is in the sauna, even being known to have a lie down! She uses the sauna to help her recover after being the support team on Dans many crazy ultra-runs.

Dan is keen to lead runs which finish with a sauna, so drop us an email if this is something you would be interested in.

Tess + Karn

Tess is keen swimmer and water-lover and has always swum in any cold water she can find!

She is a massive fan of sauna-ing after a swim to warm her up and recover – but lately she has also used it to manage her menopausal symptoms. Lots of women have reported reductions in hot flushes when regularly using a sauna, which sounds counterintuitive, but works because the blood flow is improved, along with strengthening the immune system. Tess also loves it as a way to connect with friends and family in a natural setting.

Karn, a surfer and maker, was keen to build and craft something beautiful and useful. As a busy company director for local studio Millimetre, he loves how a sauna helps him to relax, destress and keep on top of his mental health – along with aiding his recovery from exercise.

We care.

We all have a responsibility to care for the environment. We are committed to reducing our impact on the planet and are continually looking for ways to improve our environmental performance.

Ways we do this:

  • Our saunas are built using second-hand and dead stock materials where possible. This includes the trailer, wood cladding, benches and floor.

  • All cleaning products are environmentally sustainable and kind to nature.

  • Water usage is kept at a minimum with the sea being the main source of cold water immersion.

  • Our fire-wood is locally sourced from tree surgery projects.

  • We work in partnership with a local tree-planting scheme.

If you have any suggestions or ways we can improve our sustainability let us know as we are always looking for ways to get better.
